The Refuge is sponsoring a Woodcock walk at Occoquan Bay NWR. It is had been scheduled for Saturday, March 28 but has been postponed to April 11 at 6:30 PM.
Meet up in the main parking lot on the refuge:
13950 Dawson Beach Road
Woodbridge, VA 22191
It's hoped that attendees will be fortunate this year to hear and see the elusive woodcocks doing their sky dances.
The below is a description from the refuge website of the American Woodcock:
The singing “sky dances” of the American woodcock can be witnessed at Occoquan Bay NWR beginning in February and can continue into June. This plump, forest-dwelling shorebird, takes advantage of the refuge’s shrubland habitats for their famous breeding displays and nesting. In the wet, woody areas of the refuge, the woodcock forage for earthworms by prodding the soil with their long bills.
The predicted cold and wind have required the event to be rescheduled for April 11, at 6:30 PM.
